Researchers develop human prosthesis for balance unfortunately its not a tail

Theres hope for those of us suffering from chronic imbalance as a result of staring too long at periodic tables and 20-sided dice. Its an implant developed by neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

The implant looks to off-set balance irregularities in the human vestibular system caused by trauma or disease affecting the gyroscopic function of the inner ear. A microprocessor converts signals received from a motion sensor worn on the head into electrical impulses. These are then sent to an electrode implanted into the inner ear. The first test will begin next week on a rhesus monkey. A move which evokes cries of "unfair" from us -- unlike nerds, monkeys already have excellent balance.

It’s Not A High Speed Police Chase Until Deep Fryers Come Flying Out Of The Escape Vehicle

You might’ve think you’ve heard about an intense, high-speed police chase, but you’d be wrong. Or at least you thought you knew what intense was, before reading that one particular police showdown had deep fryers flying out the back of a suspect’s truck. Deep fryers! Flying!

It’s too much excitement to bear on a Friday, but let’s forge ahead, shall we?

KHOU.com has the story out of Houston, where four men were allegedly part of a team that burgled a kitchen supply store late Wednesday night. Perhaps there was a dire need for cutlery or a lot of fried chicken, because witnesses say the men were loading equipment into a U-Haul truck at the front of the store.

By the time cops showed up on the scene, the getaway vehicle was already going about the business of getting away, and the suspects refused to pull over. Instead, the chase was on.

Things soon got of control, as high-speed chases often do, and the driver of the truck smashed into a traffic light, a bus stop and a fire hydrant. Somewhere along the way, the truck’s rear door came open, launching several deep fryers willy-nilly onto the street.

Police caught up with the suspects after the crash, sending all four suspects running. Two of the men were eventually arrested and charged with serious injury to an instrument that brings delight via deep-fried goodness. Only the first seven words in that sentence are true.

ZTE’s 30 Android Tablet The Optik 2 Comes To A Sprint Store Near You

When it comes to buying a tablet, for many the choice boils down to what features they want. How light is it? How big is the screen? Should you get a powerful processor? Do you want smaller bezels? Maybe you like a certain brand, and if you could play games on it, that would be a bonus. For some though, the only real factor is price. Some users just don’t want to fork over a whole lot for a tablet. They might not be planning to use it much, and just want something with a bigger display so they can have more screen real estate to browse or use apps. If you fall into this category, you may want to consider the new 7 inch slate tablet from ZTE.

The Optik 2, as ZTE is calling it, is now available to purchase at Sprint Retailers nationwide and through the Sprint web portal, and the best part about it is, it fits into a budget. It will only cost you a mere $29.99 to pick it up. That’s a dirt cheap price for something that many spend at least $100 on. Now you can’t just walk into any Sprint store and slam $30 down and call it good. You’ll have to sign up for a new 2-year contract to get the Optik 2 at that price, however if you’re already a Sprint subscriber, or were thinking about looking at their service and you have wanted a tablet, well then it’s something you could be interested in.

The Optik 2 isn’t really light on specs either, even for a contract price of $30. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8625Q quad-core processor under the hood, and sports a 4,000mAh battery to keep you going with whatever activities you have planned for its use. The 1GB of RAM is nothing too special but it isn’t exactly terrible, and should you need to store stuff on the device you can utilize the 8GB of internal memory, and if you fill it up you can move onto the microSD card(if you have one), which supports up to 32GB of extra storage. The Optik 2 comes with a 5MP rear facing camera and a 2MP front facing camera, and it runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. Now for the monthly cost. Since this is requiring a 2-year contract to get the $29.99 price tag, the offerable plans you can pick this up with starts with 2GB of data for just $15 a month. From there you can move up to 3GB of data for $35 a month, and 6GB for $50 a month. If you suck data up like it’s life force than you may want to consider the 12GB data option, but it’s a tad pricey at $80 a month. On the other end of the spectrum, if you won’t be using this thing much when you’re away from Wifi, you can grab a plan that costs only $5 a month, which you gives you a mere 25MB of data, or there’s the 100MB option for $10. Is the Optik 2 sounding pretty good to anyone?

Comet ISON will be visible even through a pair of High powered binoculars

We’ve been following the comet ISON since it was first discovered. The comet is making its way towards the sun and putting on quite a light show as it does. The comet will reach its closest approach to the sun around Thanksgiving day, assuming it doesn’t break apart before then.

Amateur sky watchers wanting to get a look at the comet can now see ISON with a high quality set of binoculars or small telescope. The comet will make its closest encounter with the sun on November 28. That pass will bring the comet within 730,000 miles of the surface of the sun.

Sky gazer Pete Lawrence from Selsey in the UK said:

I have made my first confirmed binocular sighting of C/2012 S1 ISON as well. ISON’s head appears small and stellar through a pair of 15x70s optics.

The comet can be seen near the constellation Virgo right now. It’s visible low in the predawn eastern sky. Right now the comet is said to be about the same brightness as a magnitude 8 star. That makes it too dim to see with the naked eye, but easy to spot with a telescope or binoculars.

The comet will put on a nice light show in December, if it survives its pass with the sun. Some fear the comet will break apart as it approaches the sun. There is a chance the comet will get bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. SlsshGear , NASA

A New Huawei Tablet With Super Thin And Sleek Design Passes Through Bluetooth Certification

Major Chinese manufacturer Huawei had some interesting things to show us at CES, like their TRON micro console that they showed off yesterday, as well as the Ascend Mate 2 which they announced. As for things unrelated to the Consumer Electronics Show, one of Huawei’s tablets recently showed up on the Bluetooth SIG website. The Huawei 7D-501L is the tablet we’re talking about, and it just received its certification for the Bluetooth wireless feature. Currently Huawei hasn’t officially announced anything about the tablet, but we do know that it is a 7-inch slate style that is a mere 7.5mm thick. (or should we say thin?) You can compare this to similar sized devices like the Apple iPad Air, which is 7.5mm as well, or compare it to the Nexus 7 2013 model that is 8.7mm thin. The Nexus 7 is already a thin tablet, so imagine this Huawei tablet in your hands.

The 7D-501L is made up of an aluminum alloy housing, which should give it a nice premium feel. It has support for WiFi connectivity, as well as support for connecting up to 3G and 4G LTE networks. While the aluminum-alloy housing is nice, sadly it looks like it’ll only come in one color, (a silver-white) which doesn’t leave much room for originality. Although this won’t really be an issue for most people as many of the tablets already offered currently, only come in one color as well. There is no actual mention of when we might exactly see this tablet show up for consumer purchase, but we do know “where” it will be headed thanks to the Bluetooth SIG. According to the site and document listing, the 7D-501L will end up shipping to North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It looks like it’ll end up in a wide variety of locations, so if this tablet so far sounds like something you might be interested in, it’ll be available in many different regions and you should be able to pick one up.

Besides some of the still unknown specs of the device, we also have no word on what this tablet will cost. Huawei typically doesn’t charge an arm and a leg for their devices though so we can’t imagine it will be too expensive. Especially if Huawei wants to be able to compete with the Nexus 7.
