ZTE’s 30 Android Tablet The Optik 2 Comes To A Sprint Store Near You

Screenshot

When it comes to buying a tablet, for many the choice boils down to what features they want. How light is it? How big is the screen? Should you get a powerful processor? Do you want smaller bezels? Maybe you like a certain brand, and if you could play games on it, that would be a bonus. For some though, the only real factor is price. Some users just don’t want to fork over a whole lot for a tablet. They might not be planning to use it much, and just want something with a bigger display so they can have more screen real estate to browse or use apps. If you fall into this category, you may want to consider the new 7 inch slate tablet from ZTE.

The Optik 2, as ZTE is calling it, is now available to purchase at Sprint Retailers nationwide and through the Sprint web portal, and the best part about it is, it fits into a budget. It will only cost you a mere $29.99 to pick it up. That’s a dirt cheap price for something that many spend at least $100 on. Now you can’t just walk into any Sprint store and slam $30 down and call it good. You’ll have to sign up for a new 2-year contract to get the Optik 2 at that price, however if you’re already a Sprint subscriber, or were thinking about looking at their service and you have wanted a tablet, well then it’s something you could be interested in.

The Optik 2 isn’t really light on specs either, even for a contract price of $30. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8625Q quad-core processor under the hood, and sports a 4,000mAh battery to keep you going with whatever activities you have planned for its use. The 1GB of RAM is nothing too special but it isn’t exactly terrible, and should you need to store stuff on the device you can utilize the 8GB of internal memory, and if you fill it up you can move onto the microSD card(if you have one), which supports up to 32GB of extra storage. The Optik 2 comes with a 5MP rear facing camera and a 2MP front facing camera, and it runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. Now for the monthly cost. Since this is requiring a 2-year contract to get the $29.99 price tag, the offerable plans you can pick this up with starts with 2GB of data for just $15 a month. From there you can move up to 3GB of data for $35 a month, and 6GB for $50 a month. If you suck data up like it’s life force than you may want to consider the 12GB data option, but it’s a tad pricey at $80 a month. On the other end of the spectrum, if you won’t be using this thing much when you’re away from Wifi, you can grab a plan that costs only $5 a month, which you gives you a mere 25MB of data, or there’s the 100MB option for $10. Is the Optik 2 sounding pretty good to anyone? Screenshot Screenshot

Tips To Fix iOS 7 Battery Drain

Until scientists deal with the issue of battery to power our gadgets, we are still at the mercy of those things.

Quite a few users of an Apple device running the new iOS 7 have complained of rapid drainage on their iDevices. This may not be due to bad battery but may be due to certain settings that comes with iOS 7 for example putting off Bluetooth and WiFi when not  in use.

To quickly fix this, a series of things have been suggested and they have actually worked and increase the battery life of iDevices substantially.

Tip 1: Reduce Screen brightness of device:
To quickly do this, swipe up the from bottom of screen to reveal quick settings. Just move the first slider to the left and the screen brightness would  be reduced.

Tip 2: Change Wallpaper
iOS 7 have two types of images that can be used as Wallpaper; Dynamic and Still Wallpaper. The Dynamic wallpaper take a toll on battery over time. Therefore its suggested that the Still wallpaper be used which actually helps.

To do this, go to Settings -->Wallpapers & Brightness-->Chose Wallpaper and click on the Stills Wallpaper type. There you can select either the pre-installed wallpapers or choose from Photos.

Tips 3: Reduce Motion
A splendid feature of iOS 7 is the Motion Feature which gives a parallax effect of icons and alerts including the zooming effect when moving between screens or apps. However, this effect can also affect battery over time. Therefore its better to be turned off when one is low on battery power.

To do this, go to Settings-->General-->Accessibility-->Reduce Motion, now toggle the feature ON. This would disable the motion effect.

Tip 4: Background App Refresh
Background app refresh allows apps to refresh their content when on WiFi or cellular or use location services. Turning off this feature will help preserve battery life significantly.

To do this, go to Settings-->General-->Background App Refreshes and slide it OFF.

Tip 5: Automatic App Updates
Automatic app updates is good as you would always be updated if new updates for apps are released, however, it can take a toll on battery too. This is because the device will always access the internet at frequent times to see if there is an update for apps at the expense of the battery and if it finds any, automatic download of the update would begin.

To stop this, just navigate to Settings-->iTunes & App Store scroll down to Automatic Downloads section and turn Updates.

Tip 6: Location Services
A situation where GPS is always on trying to pinpoint exact location of the phone means rapid battery draining. Usually, GPS doesnt function well alone, it tries to use the combine ability of WiFi to get exact location, so usually, two things are in operation here. The logical thing is to turn off Location Services.

To do this, just navigate to Settings-->Privacy--Location Services and simply turn it off.

Tips 7: Auto Lock
Auto Lock isnt only there for security reasons but it also serves to help the phone go to sleep by itself when its not in use thus conserving all the battery that needs to be conserved.

In other to setup auto lock, just go to Settings-->General--> scroll down to Auto-Lock and then set it to any time you please.

The good thing is if these tips are followed and used, the battery life of an iDevice running iOS 7 should be considerably better than.

Nokia 808 PureView to skip the North American Market

In a move that should surprise no one, Nokia will not be releasing the Nokia 808 PureView in the North American market. This information comes from Nokias developer website, which lists the availability of the 808 as Global, with a footnote than excludes North America.

Nokia has mentioned in the past that once their Windows Phone devices hit the North American market, they will no longer launch new Symbian and Series 40 handsets anymore. So all you North Americans out there who wish to get their hands on this 41-megapixel monster will just have to import it when the device hits the shelves everywhere else in the world.

Samsung Will Be The First To Release Curved Displays

Samsung is gearing up to be the first to release a curved display for smartphones come October this year.
This plan was initially revealed in Seoul during the launch of Galaxy Note 3 and it does seem that its going to materialize sooner than expected.

Although, Samsung is not the only company looking into releasing curve display technology, LG which is a long time rival of Samsung also have plans to mass produce both curve and flexible displays for smartphones by the end of 2013.

It is important not to confuse curve screen with flexible screen which Nokia showed a year ago in the Nokia Kinetic programme.

What we do know is  that curved displays will debut on Samsung devices next month but flexible displays are not expected anytime soon.

In the meanwhile, you can smile at the revealing of Samsungs gold S4 (pictured above) that is ready for purchase soon which is definitely a reply to Apples gold iPhone 5S.

Nokia Lumia 810 and 822 to miss on the Lumia Black update

We have some pretty awful news about T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers who have a Lumia 810 or 822. Apparently Nokia has completed the Lumia Black firmware update for the Lumia 810 andLumia 822, but the carriers wont push it to the users.

This info comes from a chat with Nokias Customer support, so its not like is fully official just yet. According to the users chat with the Nokia representative, the update is not happening and Verizon is only listing it as Coming Soon, just to avoid angry users rant.

There is no official reason for not releasing an update that has been finished. Perhaps its something that doesnt fit within the carriers approval process. But whatever the reasons, the question "what happens next" will be here all the way to April, when the Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to go official.

Will the Lumia 810 and 822 be left stuck on Amber forever? Will they merly skip GDR3 + Lumia Black update and move straight to WP8.1? We are yet to find out.

Note that the international Lumia 820 is getting the Lumia Black update as planned.

The user also points out Nokia is throwing a free Purity Pro headset for those having Bluetooth issues with the Lumia 810 or 822. So, you might want to check with Nokias customer support if you have the same problems and see if you qualify for a free headset.
