Get bus and train directions on the go with Google Maps for mobile

Joe Hughes, Software Engineer

Ever since Google Maps added public transportation directions for San Francisco, its been a lot easier for me to figure out which buses and trains will get me where Im going around town, so that todays gas prices take less of a toll on my wallet. Even so, Ive often found myself wishing that I had an easy way to get transit directions while Im out and about.

Enter the new version of Google Maps for mobile. This version (2.2) allows you to get transit directions in all the same places as the web version of Google Maps, including Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver, and over 40 other cities in North America.

This version of Google Maps for mobile even has a few tricks not yet available on the desktop version of Google Maps. For instance, you can find the last transit trips of the day (to figure out how late you can stay at the party) and more easily browse through earlier or later trips. The My Location feature, available on most phones, also makes it easier to set the start point of your journey.

To see how the transit feature of Google Maps for mobile works, take a look at this quick video walkthrough with my co-worker Ryan:

This version of Google Maps for mobile also includes a bunch of other goodies, like faster searching on BlackBerry devices and star ratings for businesses. Its currently available for BlackBerry devices and many other Java-based phones. To download it to your phone visit http://www.google.com/gmm from your phones web browser or on the desktop.

Were working to bring public transit directions to Google Maps on other devices, so stay tuned!

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Now Available on Google Compute Engine

Todays guest post comes from Michael Miller, Vice President of Global Alliances and Marketing at SUSE. In this post, Michael describes SUSEs integration with Google Compute Engine.

We’re happy to bring SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to Google Compute Engine for all machine instance types. We’re committed to delivering products that offer the performance, reliability, security and scalability that development teams and IT operations groups require when moving to the cloud.

One of our key focus areas from the beginning that has only escalated in importance is the delivery of the most scalable operating system possible. Using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on Google Compute Engine gives users access to an operating system that is certified with 4,096 logical CPUs and 64 TiB of RAM and contains the OFED Stack for low-latency, inter-machine communication. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server also ships with the XFS file system and Btrfs, a more resilient file system with improved scalability and data integrity.

With more than 10,000 applications from over 1,500 ISVs certified on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, we believe that running SUSE on Google Compute Engine will offer customers a highly resilient infrastructure for building and running their workloads in a public cloud environment. We also include a comprehensive software developer kit (SDK) with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. The SDK includes versioning tools (git, subversion), Perl, Python, PHP and Ruby on Rails and helps make SUSE Linux Enterprise Server an ideal platform for Google Compute Engine users to develop and test new applications. And to simplify the deployment, configuration and administration of workloads on Google Compute Engine, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server also includes an integrated suite of management tools (YaST, AutoYaST, Zypp and a small footprint CIM broker).

Whether developing new applications or bringing existing workloads, this is just some of the innovation that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will offer Google Compute Engine users.

1 6 times the graphics performance boost! First test on Android Kit Kat 4 4

Translated by Google

No conference, along with Nexus 5 Google Play simultaneously in nine countries shelves, Android 4.4 coming this way, so low-key than ever. Before Nestle KitKat chocolate bars a brand name, this naming system is Android and won the Nestle cooperation negotiations. This is also the newly named Jelly Bean 4.1,4.2,4.3 three generations later, also means that Android 4.4 will be many new changes.

Rockchip RK3026 dual core, quad-core chip manufacturer RK3188 program, such as Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus, five elements, PIPO, the original road and many other brands have announced upcoming Android 4.4 upgrade. The author through special channels, to get a good Android 4.4 system has been installed in the domestic flat-panel engineering prototype, we go and savor the taste of the chocolate bar.

1. Full of feeling good
Compared to the previous Android system, the relatively large changes in 4.4. First, the status bar and virtual buttons into a transparent state, and to maintain a faint gradient effect. A place close to the border around the black edges designed background (very fine), the center gradually diverge transparent. Virtual button white vacuum, so beautiful and eye-catching mix. The default is three: back, home, task manager. Screenshot open in the settings themselves. I think this program has two advantages: ① reduce light leakage around the sense of the display, ② certain procedures to better vision without being blocked toolbar.

4.4 drawer, leaving only the icon of all programs, cancel the first two generations of the drawer? Actually no, but for a place only. Long press on the desktop, out of the secondary menu. Which encompasses: wallpaper, widgets, settings.

Rather strange that not all settings set, but named "Search and sticky notes" of the project, specifically the four items pictured above. Another long press the desktop, but also to switch between desktops primary and secondary pages, easy management page.

In the unlock screen, retains the graphical unlock, face unlock, etc. and of course the most common slide to unlock. Android 4.2 touch sliding unlock wave does not change, there is a small tool to unlock the interface which can be customized. Whether or unlock the interface into the system can open the drop-down menu: Message Bar + set the bar.

We have seen, because it is testing the prototype, I think the system is also the initial commissioning, it is normal that some are not perfect. For example, the system language is English, after trying to find out is to adjust to Simplified Chinese, indicating that Android 4.4 is the inclusion of the Chinese package.

After adjusting for the very familiar look again relevant information. The version number is displayed rk30sdk-eng 4.4 ...... prove that the firmware from Rockchip chip solution provider.

2. The built-in domestic non-castrated complete Google+.
Only one pre-installed software, I later added a pea pod, search dogs and other software, barely reached two, so the number is not that much. When installing pea pod is connected to pc via data cable, auto safety up the middle will be prompted to first open usb debugging, allowing unknown programs and other "international practice" did agree to. Enter the pea pods in a little problem: Although Android 4.4 is included Chinese, Chinese can also be displayed, but only the English input method, therefore it downloaded Sogou input method.

Google+ will integrate Googles online products as the basis for a complete social network. In order for service is different from Facebook, Google will bet on one aspect: better privacy management, which is the soft underbelly of Facebook; course, in the past, Googles privacy but also weaknesses.
Google+ friends and acquaintances of the center point of the "circle (Circles)", the user can organize contacts in different circles, such as family members, colleagues, university students, etc., and share photos in a small circle, video, and other information.

Comes with a google erth panoramic maps from the Earth began to zoom into specific locations. Recommended a number of Chinese tourist cities in the options, feel the general effect.

3. The application of surprises and more personalized features a very avantgarde look

Support low-power sensor support Pacer pedometer, exercise anytime, anywhere. 4.4 system in this regard is to spend some thought. I think this feature will definitely be more small plates. I also tried it out of curiosity. Playing basketball together before a buddy childs Tyrant gold basketball shoes can be docked, so after analyzing the data, such as: How many times jump, the highest number of cm, ran a number of meters, the number of calories consumed. After Android users can enjoy the same, and the use of very low threshold.

The system comes with a music player too times, only to achieve "out loud" requirement, so I downloaded every day sounds. Whether in the interface, EQ settings, be far better than the former sort finishing.

The most important is not the problem, Android 4.4 improved, increased lock screen album art display and playback controls. As the figure above, it becomes unlocked four directions, {after} the front left and right to control one, it controls the pause (play), so that in case it does not unlock the direct control of the music played.

Everyday sounds with dynamic replacement cover (album cover all wake up the screen every time replacement, even if the same song in a dynamic transformation), as well as the lyrics scroll, really beautiful and practical.

4. Android office no longer tasteless

Picture browsing and playing the same songs, all with a lot of settings, edit. 4.4 added a new document processing software: Quickoffice. DTG commonly used than before on a more refined features, making it possible to commercially Android. Integrated interface contains WORD, EXCEL, PPT.

In the usual work and study, the use of the Android platform to better processing documents, spreadsheets, regardless of location space constraints. Into an additional 4.4 also supports wireless cloud print (documents, images, web pages) to add storage access framework functions, user management file.

In the camera, the 4.4 also made some fine-tuning. Panoramic photographs, video summed together. The shutter is a large round blue screen buttons, eye-catching and easy to operate. Advanced settings collections in the right shutter.

Another method to open the advanced settings are: single finger press the space in the camera interface. At this point the pop option, further sliding through the fingers, the direction of bias which option opens. There are location, countdown, picture size, shooting mode options.

The domestic flat, with a quad-core Rockchip RK3188 product, browse the web, as well as 1080P decoding playback, the effect is very smooth, rapid response.

Android 4.4 also made a multimedia optimization, support for screen recording capabilities, support for low-power audio processing, up to 60 hours of music playback time, improve 50% WiFi Display compatible Miracast certification. Often I actually experience the music playback time is indeed very impressive, than in the past similar products, fully raised several orders of magnitude, great power optimization.

5. Summary
In fact, the most fundamental optimized Android 4.4, in fact, that from now on be known as the worlds most fluent system, it can run smoothly on low 512M memory, the use of ART replace Dalvik, improve application speed. RenderScript computing optimization, enhance graphics rendering capability of 1.6 times.

According to media reports, Rockchip RK3026 dual-core chips for OEM manufacturers, overall shipments of its products in 2013 is over 200 million units. "Compatible" The biggest feature will allow the low-end tablet becomes vibrant. For the end consumer is concerned, you can more easily get good Android experience. In addition, Google recently re-released Android 4.4.1 upgrade new message, be significantly improved for the camera, although when used in flat products is unknown, but I believe the OEM so will quickly follow, let us look forward to it again.

People Loaded 4 Billion On Starbucks Gift Cards Last Year

Starbucks announced its quarterly earnings information yesterday: revenues are up, and the company earned a profit of $540.7 million. One piece of information in the report caught our eye, though: $1.3 billion was loaded on Starbucks Cards in the last quarter of the year, with $4 billion in Star Bucks loaded on cards during the past year.

Of course, the Starbucks Card is more than a gift card. Unlike most store loyalty cards, the company’s rewards program for their most addicted customers requires them to first deposit money on the stored-value card before earning rewards points. That might sound kind of onerous, but Starbucks told Quartz that 30% of their transactions were on the cards. Almost a third. Huh.

They aren’t just part of a Starbucks debit card-based economy, though: the company estimates that about 10% of American adults received a Starbucks Card as a gift at some point this holiday season.

Obama bans spying on leaders of US allies scales back NSA program

President Barack Obama banned U.S. eavesdropping on the leaders of close friends and allies on Friday and began reining in the vast collection of Americans phone data in a series of limited reforms triggered by Edward Snowdens revelations.

In a major speech, Obama took steps to reassure Americans and foreigners alike that the United States will take into account privacy concerns highlighted by former spy contractor Snowdens damaging disclosures about the sweep of monitoring activities of the National Security Agency (NSA).

"The reforms Im proposing today should give the American people greater confidence that their rights are being protected, even as our intelligence and law enforcement agencies maintain the tools they need to keep us safe," he said.

While the address was designed to fend off concerns that U.S. surveillance has gone too far, Obamas measures fell short of dismantling U.S. electronic spying programs.

Even as the White House put the final touches on the reform plan this week, media outlets reported that the NSA gathers nearly 200 million text messages a day from around the world and has put software in almost 100,000 computers allowing it to spy on those devices.

Obama promised that the United States will not eavesdrop on the heads of state or government of close U.S. friends and allies, "unless there is a compelling national security purpose." A senior administration official said that would apply to dozens of leaders.

The step was designed to smooth over frayed relations between, for example, the United States and Germany after reports surfaced last year that the NSA had monitored the cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

(Also see: Merkel-tapping allegations prompt Germany to send intelligence chiefs to US)

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff postponed a state visit to Washington in protest of the NSA spying on her email and cellphone.

"The leaders of our close friends and allies deserve to know that if I want to learn what they think about an issue, I will pick up the phone and call them, rather than turning to surveillance," Obama said.

Still, he said, U.S. intelligence will continue to gather information about the intentions of other governments, and will not apologize simply because U.S. spy services are more effective.

Obama is trying to balance public anger at the disclosure of intrusion into Americans privacy with his commitment to retain policies he considers critical to protecting the United States. In doing so, he bucked the advice of some U.S. intelligence leaders.

Some of his proposals drew skepticism from Republicans in Congress who expressed concerns that he was going too far in reining in essential spying programs.

"While we will need much more detail on the presidents new policies before passing final judgment, I am concerned that some of his proposals go too far, limiting our ability to protect the nation with little benefit to civil liberties of Americans," said Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee.

One of the biggest changes will be an overhaul of the governments handling of bulk telephone "metadata" - lists of million of phone calls made by Americans that show which numbers were called and when. Obama said the program as it currently exists will end.

In a nod to privacy advocates, the government will not hold the bulk telephone metadata, a decision that could frustrate some intelligence officials.

A presidential advisory panel had recommended that the data be controlled by a third party such as the telephone companies, but Obama did not propose who should store the phone information in the future.

(Also see: White House review panel recommends reforms of US surveillance programs)

He asked Attorney General Eric Holder and the intelligence community to report back to him before the metadata program comes up for reauthorization on March 28 on how to preserve the necessary capabilities of the program, without the government holding the metadata.

In addition, Obama said the U.S. the government will need a judicial review by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court every time intelligence agencies want to check the database of millions of telephone calls, unless there is a true emergency.

"The biggest deal is going to the court each time," said retired General Michael Hayden, a former director of both the NSA and the Central Intelligence Agency.

Secret courts

The usefulness of keeping metadata phone records has been questioned by a review panel appointed by Obama. It found that while the program had produced some leads for counter-terrorism investigators, such information had not proven decisive in a single case.

Among a list of reforms, Obama called on Congress to establish an outside panel of privacy advocates for the FISA Court that considers terrorism cases. The former chief judge of the FISA court had opposed such a step.

Members of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence called for more restraint on the NSA.

"In particular, we will work to close the back-door searches loophole and ensure that the government does not read Americans emails or other communications without a warrant," Senators Ron Wyden, Mark Udall and Martin Heinrich said in a joint statement.

Obama made clear that his administrations anger at Snowdens revelations has not abated. Snowden, living in asylum in Russia, is wanted on espionage charges, although some Americans would like him to be granted amnesty for exposing secrets they feel needed to be made public.

"Given the fact of an open investigation, Im not going to dwell on Mr. Snowdens actions or his motivations," Obama said, making a rare mention of the former NSA contractor by name.

"The sensational way in which these disclosures have come out has often shed more heat than light, while revealing methods to our adversaries that could impact our operations in ways that we may not fully understand for years to come," he added.

Obama was silent on a number of his review groups recommendations, including some that called for a rebalancing of the intelligence agencies sometimes conflicting missions to enhance cyber-security while conducting computer spying and offensive operations.

The group had asked the administration to end efforts to weaken cryptography so that spies and law enforcement can more easily break into communications.

The panel also sought a wholesale change to the governments practice of developing or buying information about weaknesses in software design.

The White House did not address those points, to the disappointment of outside experts who feel the United States is making Internet security worse.

"NSA sabotage of crypto standards was the thing most conspicuously absent for me," University of Pennsylvania cryptographer Matt Blaze wrote on Twitter.

Nokia Lumia 810 and 822 to miss on the Lumia Black update

We have some pretty awful news about T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers who have a Lumia 810 or 822. Apparently Nokia has completed the Lumia Black firmware update for the Lumia 810 andLumia 822, but the carriers wont push it to the users.

This info comes from a chat with Nokias Customer support, so its not like is fully official just yet. According to the users chat with the Nokia representative, the update is not happening and Verizon is only listing it as Coming Soon, just to avoid angry users rant.

There is no official reason for not releasing an update that has been finished. Perhaps its something that doesnt fit within the carriers approval process. But whatever the reasons, the question "what happens next" will be here all the way to April, when the Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to go official.

Will the Lumia 810 and 822 be left stuck on Amber forever? Will they merly skip GDR3 + Lumia Black update and move straight to WP8.1? We are yet to find out.

Note that the international Lumia 820 is getting the Lumia Black update as planned.

The user also points out Nokia is throwing a free Purity Pro headset for those having Bluetooth issues with the Lumia 810 or 822. So, you might want to check with Nokias customer support if you have the same problems and see if you qualify for a free headset.
