Samsung Will Be The First To Release Curved Displays

Samsung is gearing up to be the first to release a curved display for smartphones come October this year.
This plan was initially revealed in Seoul during the launch of Galaxy Note 3 and it does seem that its going to materialize sooner than expected.

Although, Samsung is not the only company looking into releasing curve display technology, LG which is a long time rival of Samsung also have plans to mass produce both curve and flexible displays for smartphones by the end of 2013.

It is important not to confuse curve screen with flexible screen which Nokia showed a year ago in the Nokia Kinetic programme.

What we do know is  that curved displays will debut on Samsung devices next month but flexible displays are not expected anytime soon.

In the meanwhile, you can smile at the revealing of Samsungs gold S4 (pictured above) that is ready for purchase soon which is definitely a reply to Apples gold iPhone 5S.

Nokia Lumia 810 and 822 to miss on the Lumia Black update

We have some pretty awful news about T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers who have a Lumia 810 or 822. Apparently Nokia has completed the Lumia Black firmware update for the Lumia 810 andLumia 822, but the carriers wont push it to the users.

This info comes from a chat with Nokias Customer support, so its not like is fully official just yet. According to the users chat with the Nokia representative, the update is not happening and Verizon is only listing it as Coming Soon, just to avoid angry users rant.

There is no official reason for not releasing an update that has been finished. Perhaps its something that doesnt fit within the carriers approval process. But whatever the reasons, the question "what happens next" will be here all the way to April, when the Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to go official.

Will the Lumia 810 and 822 be left stuck on Amber forever? Will they merly skip GDR3 + Lumia Black update and move straight to WP8.1? We are yet to find out.

Note that the international Lumia 820 is getting the Lumia Black update as planned.

The user also points out Nokia is throwing a free Purity Pro headset for those having Bluetooth issues with the Lumia 810 or 822. So, you might want to check with Nokias customer support if you have the same problems and see if you qualify for a free headset.

Comet ISON will be visible even through a pair of High powered binoculars

We’ve been following the comet ISON since it was first discovered. The comet is making its way towards the sun and putting on quite a light show as it does. The comet will reach its closest approach to the sun around Thanksgiving day, assuming it doesn’t break apart before then.

Amateur sky watchers wanting to get a look at the comet can now see ISON with a high quality set of binoculars or small telescope. The comet will make its closest encounter with the sun on November 28. That pass will bring the comet within 730,000 miles of the surface of the sun.

Sky gazer Pete Lawrence from Selsey in the UK said:

I have made my first confirmed binocular sighting of C/2012 S1 ISON as well. ISON’s head appears small and stellar through a pair of 15x70s optics.

The comet can be seen near the constellation Virgo right now. It’s visible low in the predawn eastern sky. Right now the comet is said to be about the same brightness as a magnitude 8 star. That makes it too dim to see with the naked eye, but easy to spot with a telescope or binoculars.

The comet will put on a nice light show in December, if it survives its pass with the sun. Some fear the comet will break apart as it approaches the sun. There is a chance the comet will get bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. SlsshGear , NASA

Beats Music review

Theres no shortage of music subscription services that offer unlimited streaming for a monthly fee. The conceit of the latest offering, Beats Music, is that its playlists and other recommendations are curated by warm-blooded humans, not robots.

As CEO Ian Rogers proclaims, "Algorithms can do sounds like. They cant do feels like."

Beats Music comes from Beats Electronics, the headphone-maker backed by hip-hop mogul Dr. Dre and former music executive Jimmy Iovine.

For $10 a month, you get unlimited streaming and song downloading for offline listening. Downloaded songs expire once you cancel the subscription. AT&T customers are also eligible for a $15-a-month family plan for as many as five family members. You can sign up for a 90-day free trial, but theres no free, ad-supported version like some of its rivals.

Beats Music has its roots in the MOG streaming service, which Beats Electronics bought in 2012. Beats Music has a more playful interface than MOG, which was mostly utilitarian. Beats also introduces a few ways to discover both new and old material.

Apps Android, iOS, and Windows Phone are available now. Computer users can listen through their Web browser. And like other streaming services, you can choose specific songs, albums or artists on your own. Beats Music has a catalog of more than 20 million songs, which is comparable to its rivals.

I began by going through a get-to-know-you sequence for new users, picking a few genres and artists I like. Somewhat flustered by the scarcity of choices, I picked "Sting," "Katy Perry" and "Harry Connick Jr." and the genre "Pop." Im glad I was discerning about these choices (redoing them several times), because eventually I was presented with something I liked.

beats_music_screenshot_ap.jpg/

The Beats Music app tries to take the information you enter in order to present you with a variety of albums and playlists that are "Just For You."

Another section for recommendations, dubbed "The Sentence," prompts you to fill in blanks to establish what youd like to hear, but you end up with silly sentences like "Im in the shower & feel like ordering in with my family to Indie." Its reminiscent of Allrecipes "Dinner Spinner" except Im not sure what ingredients Im adding in. I mostly skipped this game because I found the resulting choices to be far too random.

Another "Highlights" section made more sense, like a playlist of the "2014 Grammy Winners."

One recommendation I liked from the "Just For You" section was a playlist called "Young Lovers Heartbreak Mix." If you have a rainy day - or in drought-plagued Los Angeles, at least a few hours with nothing better to do - its worth a listen.

The 25-song, 96-minute playlist starts off slowly with the piano ballad "Say Something" by A Great Big World. It builds gradually, ramping up with the rise-from-the-ashes fourth song "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato. It hits a crescendo between songs 13 and 14, when "Dont Speak," Gwen Stefanis 1996 hit with her band, No Doubt, crashes into Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" from last year. Somewhat appropriately, the playlist ends with Taylor Swifts power recovery song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

beats_music_screenshot_playstore.JPG/

The app says the playlist was created by "Beats Pop," but the curator was actually Arjan Timmermans, the popular blogger behind ArjanWrites.com. Hired as the head of pop and dance programming at Beats Music last year, Timmermans is one of nine real people who put some 5,000 playlists together for Beats Music. (Neither Dre nor Iovine are among them).

The playlist was designed for "a teenager who got their heart broken for the first time," Timmermans said in an interview. The songs - a mix of hits by current teen idols and breakup classics like "Dont Speak" - are meant to work together emotionally, he said, telling the listener, "Its OK to be sad, but I can move through this."

The playlist has a beginning, middle and an end and runs about as long as a movie. And I found that some songs lyrics work together back-to-back, like the way Stefanis line "dont tell me cause it hurts" runs into Cyrus "dont you ever say I just walked away, I will always want you."

Thats a link I dont see a machine making these days. For people, its probably a subconscious connection buried deep down there somewhere.

I am no teenager anymore, am happily married and am not the playlists presumptive audience. But as a sampling of what Beats Music has to offer, it shows me this app has a soul.
